Baptism: Sacrament of Initiation

bullet

Inner Grace

Baptism is the first of the sacraments because it is the sign by which a person who has accepted Christ becomes a member of the Church. Baptism means plunging, and up till about the year 1300 the people being baptized were totally immersed in water, signifying that they shared in the death and Resurrection of Christ. Today water is poured on the head only, but the meaning is the same. Water is also a sign of cleansing from sin and a sign of a new life. When babies are baptized, their parents and godparents make an act of faith on the child's behalf and commit themselves to bringing up the child within the family of the Church.

Expectant parents, please contact us at least six months prior to the anticipated birth date.

Arrangements are to be made to begin the Baptism Preparation Program. The class is offered once quarterly on the first Tuesday of January, April, July, and October.

Arrangements are also to be made with a priest to set the specific baptism date and time. Saturday and Sunday celebrations are held immediately following Mass except during the seasons of Advent or Lent.
